Tatiana
Sarbinska, Balkan and Bulgarian
Singing
Tatiana
Sarbinska is one of the world's leading experts on the performance of
Balkan folk singing. A gifted teacher, she has directed groups, music
events, and workshops in the USA since 1991. She currently serves as
artistic director to four ensembles, two in Boston (Zornitsa, and Divi Zheni)
and two in Washington DC (Slaveya and Orfeia),
and has recently held workshops at Boston University, the New England
Conservatory of Music, and The Boston Conservatory.
Born in the village of Rila in Bulgaria, she rose quickly through the
ranks of the finest Bulgarian state choruses to become one of the
preeminent soloists of her generation. Tatiana's amazing vocal prowess
is matched by her magnetic stage presence and her charismatic delivery.
For many years, she was the featured soloist of the internationally
acclaimed Pirin Ensemble. With Pirin, she toured extensively and made
numerous recordings and TV films, earning "national treasure" status
and renown as "the voice of Bulgaria." Her extensive repertoire
includes music from all of Bulgaria's folklore regions.
In 2004, the University of
Maryland hired Tatiana to be the music director for their
production of the Greek tragedy, Trojan Women. Tatiana composed and
arranged music for the Greek chorus and taught the players to sing in
Balkan style.-
Tatiana was the recipient of the Washington
Area Music Award World
Music Vocalist, 2004, and she performed for the "Wammies" gala
event at the newly opened Strathmore
Music Center.
