Music Together classes are based on the belief that music is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence and pleasure in the music of our culture. Children have many opportunities to create and to play—making up rhythm patterns, making up new words to songs, making up movements to express a sound. The involvement of parents or caregivers is a vital part of the class.
For newborns to 4 yrs.
Tuition $200 (10 weeks)
Tuition includes an illustrated songbook, parent education materials, and a CD of music used in class.
Sibling fee: $160 (no extra materials required)
Courses run for 10 weeks. Each class is 45 minutes.

Spring 2007-2008: Begins March 5-24, 2008

Music Discoveries

Music Discoveries, Ages 4 & 5
Co-instructors: Sadie Danforth-Brightman
& Steve Pixley
Through singing, rhythmic games, imaginative storytelling and creative movement, children in the Music Discoveries classes will deepen their general musicianship while refining their basic musical skills. The class emphasizes group work, ensemble cooperation, and listening skills, while presenting an introduction to musical notation in an age appropriate way. Lessons include illustrated songs, rhythm cards, and moveable notes on a larger-than-life musical staff. The class also includes “project days,” where students make their own musical instruments, which are then incorporated into class activities. The class emphasizes a cross-disciplinary range of expressive tools to enhance children’s musical awareness and confidence as they approach the age when private lessons begin. As a precursor to lessons, as a compliment, or on its own, Music Discoveries serves young children’s needs to be imaginative, exploratory and to move freely in a musical setting.
Sec. 1: Thursdays, 3:15–4pm

Sec. 2: Thursdays, 4:15–5pm
Begins January 31, 2008
Tuition $225

Music Together group photo “One of the most special aspects of teaching young children music is observing how music making becomes a part of who they are as people. Through the Music Together classes, rhythm becomes internal, singing becomes more natural, and the foundation for future musical growth is set. I design fun classes
so that the young children’s first association with music making is joyful and
allows for experimentation. In a recent class, a nine-month-old baby smiled
and made eye contact with me, felt the pulse of the music around him, and
subtly adjusted his own rhythmic bouncing to match mine. A moment like this
reinforces the fact that these creative and enjoyable experiences are important
in the formative musical development for each child.”
