Music Discoveries, Ages 4 & 5
15-week terms begin 9/25/08 & 2/12//09
|Instructors: Vera Savage
Through singing, rhythmic games, imaginative storytelling and creative movement, children in the Music Discoveries classes will deepen their general musicianship while refining their basic musical skills. The class emphasizes group work, ensemble cooperation, and listening skills, while presenting an introduction to musical notation in an age appropriate way. Lessons include illustrated songs, rhythm cards, and moveable notes on a larger-than-life musical staff. The class also includes “project days,” where students make their own musical instruments, which are then incorporated into class activities. The class emphasizes a cross-disciplinary range of expressive tools to enhance children’s musical awareness and confidence as they approach the age when private lessons begin. As a precursor to lessons, as a compliment, or on its own, Music Discoveries serves young children’s needs to be imaginative, exploratory and to move freely in a musical setting.
Sec. 1: Thursdays, 3:15–4pm for new students ages 4-younger 5s
Sec. 2: Thursdays, 4:15–5pm for returning students, or new older 5s
Tuition $240

“One of the most special aspects of teaching young children music is observing how music making becomes a part of who they are as people. Through the Music Together classes, rhythm becomes internal, singing becomes more natural, and the foundation for future musical growth is set. I design fun classes
so that the young children’s first association with music making is joyful and
allows for experimentation. In a recent class, a nine-month-old baby smiled
and made eye contact with me, felt the pulse of the music around him, and
subtly adjusted his own rhythmic bouncing to match mine. A moment like this
reinforces the fact that these creative and enjoyable experiences are important
in the formative musical development for each child.”
